Typing Test #15

This test is based on a chilling yet beautiful poem called Hieroglyphic Stairway by Drew Dellinger about our responsibility to the planet in light of what we know about environmental destruction. Typeroids

In this game, you will be trying to destroy the falling asteroids before they reach the bottom of the screen. Each asteroid contains a letter, and once you type this letter, the asteroid will break apart into smaller pieces, each of which contains a new letter so you must then get these too. With each new wave of asteroids, they will fall faster and more frequently, so the game becomes ever-more difficult as you progress. I especially like the music in this game which has a nice groove and seems appropriate for a space-themed game.

Key Master 3

This is one of the more enjoyable typing games around, and serves an example of how games can make keyboarding practice enjoyable. The object is to fend off the invading hordes of creatures by typing the words associated with each attacker, destroying them if you do so. As you pass through the levels, the words get longer and the invaders swifter.
There are other objects that can appear on your screen for you to collect with your typing skills. You can heal your energy with ‘heal’ potion or or eliminate all the creatures on the screen with ‘nova’ potion. There are also a set of keys you need to collect by typing their names when they appear.
If the attackers get to you, they will … well attack, and you will start losing energy. At later stages of the game, they will actually start attacking you from further away but you can still get rid of them by typing the right word.

After doing a little calculation the other day to estimate how much time I have spent typing, I decided that other people might be interested to figure this out as well. So I have whipped up a handy little application that will ask you a few questions about your typing habits and then try to estimate how much time you have spent typing at your job or throughout your whole life. I was surprised to see that throughout my life, I have already spent over 2 years typing! Take the quick quiz and find out where your time lies, and when you are done, share it with your friends.

For me, I apparently spent something in the neighborhood of 2 years of my life typing. Crazy. I guess I should get up from the computer right now and take a walk…

Typing Test for Mobile Devices

More and more, people are working and playing on mobile devices. This brings about increased freedom and versatility, but it also means typing on those little keypads or touch-screen interfaces. To give you a sense of how your typing speed compares on such devices, you might want to check out this iPhone/iTopuch typing test. It has a basic interface which will provide you with your wpm typing speed after copying a few sentences of text. You can play in multi-player mode via Bluetooth, and you can also publish your scores to Facebook to share with your friends.

Following up on my previous post about the potential death of the QWERTY keyboard, I figured I’d take a moment to tell you a little about QWERTY’s main competitor, DVORAK. The idea is that the Dvorak layout uses less finger motion, increases typing rate, and reduces errors compared to the de facto keyboard standard QWERTY (which was designed for use on a typewriter). This reduction in finger distance traveled was originally intended to allow faster rates of typing, but in later years is also purported to reduce repetitive-strain injuries, including carpal tunnel syndrome.
